Frequently
asked questions- Job Search:
I
really hate cold calling
and I just can't do it, so do you have any hints for me so I don't miss out on
un-advertised jobs?
Answer: Cold calling can be discouraging
& that's why many don't like it. It can be very rewarding due to very
little competition. In order not to miss out on unadvertised jobs/ hidden
job market completely, you should at least network, by letting as many people as
you can know that you are looking for a job, even if they are in a
different field or industry. Contact & talk to previous employers, associates,
customers, suppliers, other parents, neighbors, people in clubs
you belong to .... etc. Also check job openings posted on websites of
companies that interest you. Also, check the links on those
websites, as they are usually related. See
The Hidden Job Market
For the last
3 months, I have applied to every advertised job that matches my
experience & I have networked by letting everyone know that I am
looking for a job, but I haven't had any job offers so far. What am I doing wrong?
Answer: You are not
necessarily doing anything wrong. You are covering advertised jobs and
you are networking, which is good. Networking usually takes time, so
keep building your network and always follow up. Don't stop networking
after you find a job. There is another way to tap into
the hidden job market by approaching companies directly through cold
calling. See our topic on the hidden job market . Also, don't overlook your resume, cover letter and
interview techniques. Please see the different topics on our site.
